SUNFLOWER STORY: “Growing up in abuse and then experiencing sexual assault at 19, I always felt like someone was trying to silence me. Abusers make you feel isolated by your trauma, and in turn I felt like I couldn’t speak or hardly function. Then, I came to pageantry. I had a safe and open space where I could speak about what has happened and why there needs to be change. I felt support from my fellow sister queens, judges, directors, and the pageant community in general. That’s why I ran with it. Since the beginning of The Sunflower Project, I have been able to grow and heal in ways I would have never imagined. Wherever my abusers are, you don’t have a hold on me anymore. This is my life, and I choose to thrive. “ -Founder of The Sunflower Project and Miss of America 2019, Abigail Callaway.
Happy Sunflower Sunday to you all! The Sunflower Project is excited to launch a new initiative and awareness campaign called Sunflower Stories! We understand that being able to share your story can be empowering and freeing, and we want to give survivors of sexual violence the opportunity to speak their truth and have their story heard. This could be in many forms such as through narratives, letters, poems, art, or any way that the survivor feels comfortable sharing. Submissions can be public or anonymous. The purpose of Sunflower Stories is to provide a sense of release to the survivor by telling their story and to raise awareness of how sexual violence is affecting thousands of Americans daily.
If you would like to submit to Sunflower Stories, please do so through the following form:
Thank you again for supporting our latest initiative to give survivors the power to speak and recognize them for being bold and beautiful sunflowers.
